Microsoft Office 365 launched, priced Rs. 420 per month for ayear for Home Premium

Microsoft has officially launched its
Office 365 productivity suite in the
Indian market and for the very first
time Microsoft has announced this
suite as a services rather than a
product. As previously Office 365
suites were only available as service
for enterprise users.
The Home Premium SKU of the
Office 365 is priced at Rs. 4,199
per year for its consumers and
users can also opt-in for the Rs.
420 per month option. However,
do keep in mind that even the Rs.
420 per month option is a lock-in
for a tear as the amount will be
automatically debited on a monthly
basis instead of every year.
The Office 265 Home Premium
subscription is bundled with all the
key Office apps and these include –
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote,
Outlook Publisher and Access. This
subscription can be used across 5
PCs/Macs and an additional 5
mobile device (However, currently
only Windows Phone and Windows
RT based tablets are supported).
While Mac users will still be using
Office 2011 there have been a few
indications suggesting that it will
receive a new update in the next
6-10 months.
With the Home Premium
subscription users will also get an
additional 20GB of SkyDrive
storage along with five free
SkyDrive accounts. This accounts to
a total of 27GB of free cloud
storage.
This is a good move from
Microsoft as all of a sudden many
users will find such a subscription
based model to be much affordable
than opting in for the actual
product which requires a huge
amount of money to be paid at a
single time. Hence, such a model
for Office 365 may really work out
for Microsoft.
The company has not announced
the pricing for the Home and
Student SKU, but the website has
priced it for Rs. 5,499 and it will
only work on a single PC is it not
available on the subscription
model. Similar box sets of Office
Home and Business 2013 cost Rs.
13,499 and box set for Office
Professional is priced at Rs.
24,999.

Nokia bets big onLumia 920

"That's a big phone." "Isn't it too
bulky to carry around?" These are
the first questions colleagues asked
on seeing the Nokia Lumia 920,
and the answer to both is in the
affirmative. Yes, it is a big phone,
and a bit bulky to carry around.
But then, Nokia is betting big on
this "big" phone to take on rivals
Samsung, Apple and HTC. It weighs
about 185g — far more than
Samsung SIII (133g) and HTC One
XL (129g) — but once you go
behind the bulk and the weight,
there's a lot to like in the Lumia
920.
For starters, the 4.5-inch screen
with 1,280x768 resolution is a
delight. It's a bit less than SIII, but
bigger than the iPhone 5. Colours
look more vibrant, and even in
sunlight you don't have to squint
and read texts or punch in
numbers. Watching videos on the
Lumia 920 is far better than on the
iPhone or the HTC. It certainly
scores over its competition in
terms of screen size and display.
The Lumia 920 is a Windows 8
phone and comes with popular
apps like Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps
and Nokia Music. The Nokia Drive
map is exceptionally good and way
ahead of its competition: Google
Maps. If you're not used to
Android or iOS operating systems,
you might take a liking to the
interface of Windows 8 in the first
glance only. But those accustomed
to Android or iOS would find it a
bit difficult to get used to it. In
terms of multitasking, Windows 8
certainly is a bit slow, apps often
take time to load and restart and,
at times, it does get a bit
frustrating.

Vodafone yet to get spectrum itwon in November auction

Writes to DoT seeking immediate
allocation or compensation
Vodafone India, which had won 2G
spectrum in 14 circles in the
recently concluded auction, is yet
to be allotted the airwaves, even
after paying the fee in November.
The company has written to the
Department of Telecom (DoT),
raising concerns about the undue
delay in allocation of spectrum.
Vodafone had participated in
the1800 MHz auction held in
November 2012 and acquired
spectrum in 14 service areas at an
auction price of Rs 1,128 crore.
Vodafone had chosen to pay the
money through the deferred
payment route — 30 per cent of
the bid amount upfront and the
balance in instalments.
In its communication to the DoT,
the operator said that despite the
payments made, spectrum has not
been allocated as the airwaves
were still being used by players
whose licences were cancelled by
the Supreme Court based on the
February 2012 order.
Deadline extended
However, as the court has
repeatedly extended the deadline
for cancelling licences, the
spectrum is still with the players
who were allocated the same after
January 10, 2008. For instance,
operators such as IDEA, Videocon
and Uninor are on the same
frequency band in the Assam,
Haryana, J&K and Orissa circles,
awarded to Vodafone in the
November 2012 auction.
The impasse has been caused
because the DoT had asked the
court to extend the deadline for
cancelling 2G licences.
As per the earlier plan, the auction
was to end by December and the
earlier allocation cancelled by
January. While the auction was held
on time, the cancellation deadline
has now been extended till March
11. In addition, DoT proposes to
collect a fee from players holding
the spectrum with effect from
December 19, 2012, even though
Vodafone has already paid for the
same spectrum. Vodafone said that
this is tantamount to double
payment to and unjust enrichment
of the DoT.
Vodafone has told the DoT that to
compensate the operator for this
delay, the period of 20 years (for
which the licensee has the right to
use the acquired spectrum) should
be reckoned from the date of
actual allotment of the spectrum.
